Conspiracy Defined
- Planning or helping another with;
- The commission of a crime;
- With purpose to commit, promote, or facilitate the commission of the crime; and
- Taking a step in furtherance of such crime.
Overview & Potential Penalties
The penalties that a court can impose on an individual guilty of conspiracy to commit a criminal offense in Ohio, vary greatly with the seriousness of the crime. If murder is involved, it is a felony of the first degree and can be punished by a sentence of life in prison. Notably, the planned-for crime does not even have to be carried out to commit conspiracy. The reason conspiracy is punished so severely is that people are typically more likely to carry out a crime when they are committing it with a group of people.
